THE DRIVE ISN’T far but by the time we arrive back to her friend’s house, she’s dozed off. I sit here and admire her beauty for a moment before I place a hand on her thigh and squeeze her a little.

“Wifey,” I whisper. In my mind, she’s already mine. I’m just waiting for her to be done with this divorce. Until then, I speak what I want into existence and I do so freely only because I knew she didn’t hear me.

“Hmm,” she hums softly.

“We’re back, Indigo.”

She moans and stretches – sounds so sweet. “What’d you say?” I can hear her bones waking up.

“I said we’re back.”

She looks around, recognizing where we are. “Oh.” She stretches again, looks at me and says, “Okay. I guess I’ll see you at some point next week.”

I don’t like the sound of that at all. “You guess?”

She smiles faintly. “You know what I mean.”

“Why don’t you tell me what you mean.?”

“I mean after everything with Micah on Monday—I—uh—I don’t know how I’ll be so I’ll call you when I can.”

“Okay,” I tell her. “Just don’t forget about me.”

“I won’t.”

“And I’ll check on you, too. If you get a text from me, please respond so I’ll know you’re okay.”

“Will do.”

I step out of the car, take the bouquet of roses from the backseat, then open her door. “And these are for you, by the way,” I tell her as she takes my hand.

“Romello…when did you have time to stop for flowers? Was I knocked out that long?”

“No. I bought these initially when I thought we were going on our planned date. I put them in the backseat when our plans changed and forgot about them.”

“Well, they’re gorgeous. Thank you for making me get out and do something. I’m sorry I ruined our date.”

“No worries. We’ll have plenty more opportunities.”

“Will we?” she asks, her cheeks flushed.

“Yes.” I lean in to press my lips against her temple. I’d much rather kissed her lips but I’m trying hard to be respectful. “Have a good night, Indigo.”

“You as well, Romello.”

She wraps her arms around me. For a moment, I’m in heaven – lost somewhere in time where there is no beginning and no end. That’s how good it feels for her to be this close to me. As much as I claimed to not want to be this close to a woman again, I feel right at home with my bomboncita.

When she releases me, I say, “Call me anytime, day or night, it doesn’t matter.”

“Okay.”

“Good luck on Monday.”

“Thank you.”
